What you should know about Leaf Blowers

Leaf blowers may seem like simple devices but they are highly specialized high-speed fan designed to focus the air current (up to around 200 miles per hour in some units) in the direction you want to move the leaves and not all are alike. What you want is a lightweight, well balanced, dependable and efficient piece of equipment.  Jack's only carries the top end home owner to Professional models we like to call them "Power Blowers".

For product details and models see:

Shindaiwa at http://www.shindaiwa.com/nam/en/home_nam.php

Echo at http://www.echo-usa.com/

All our Echo and Shindaiwa blowers have low emission meeting all current EPA and CARB requirements.

There are three main types of leaf lowers.

bulletHandheld units are the most popular. They're portable and convenient, yet powerful most jobs. These models can get heavy while using. Larger models can also vibrate a bit at full throttle. Consider the weight and balance of the unit when shopping.

bulletBackpack leaf blowers are gas-powered. The blower fits in a harness that's worn on the operator's back. The hose reaches to the front where the user operates the throttle and blow tube. Backpack blowers are normally used in larger areas and when power is required.

bulletWalk Behind leaf blowers cover the most acreage. Mounted on wheels, these gas-powered machines are normally the tool of choice for large commercial users, but for regular homeowners, they can make short work of a home lawn. Some are also vacuum units and use a hose for picking up debris.

Power Sources

Gas-powered leaf blowers use a 2-cycle engine, requiring mixing oil and gasoline. Mobility and work output are increased with gas blowers. This is why gas powered blowers are the choice for large areas, heavier debris and for over time savings.

Additional Considerations

In order to make accurate comparisons while shopping, keep these measurement and features in mind:
bulletCFM (cubic feet per minute) is the measure of vacuuming power. Ratings fall in the 350 to 600 CFM range.

bulletMPH (miles per hour) measures blowing. Leaf blowers perform at levels from 125 - 210 mph.

bulletDecibels (dB) is the noise rating.

bulletReduction ratio on mulching blower/vacuums calculates how many units of leaves the mulcher can produce. A 10:1 ratio means that 10 bags of leaves can be reduced to 1 bag of mulch.

bulletSpeed settings allow better control when blowing or vacuuming.

bullet Attachments, such as extension tubes for cleaning gutters, are available separately.

Always wear eye, ear and respiratory protection when using a leaf blower.
