About Chippers, Chipper/Shredders and Shredders

Chippers or Chipper/Shredders can help clean up the yard of twigs and leaves, in addition to providing some extra nutrients for your plants? Any home garden benefits from the organic matter supplied by shredded leaves and brush. The uniformly sized pieces produced by a chipper/shredder are perfect for the compost bin.

Notice: some local ordinances prohibit leaves and brush in landfills making a chipper/shredder a great solution.

How Chipper/Shredders Work

Shredder
Shredding is accomplished by hinged steel blades rotating at very high rpm. These blades, called flails, chop up leaves and twigs. Leaves are raked into the shredder through an adjustable ramp. The processed material is discharged into a bag or onto the ground. Screens may be attached for filtering the chopped-up leaves. Anything that doesn't pass through the screen is re-circulated for more shredding. Screens are available in various sizes to adjust the fineness of finished material. Screens will clog, especially when the leaves are wet, but are easily cleaned and the resulting product is great for composting.

Chipper/Shredder
The chipper/shredder combination is the most common unit for all-purpose home use.

The shred function described above is joined by a chipper, allowing larger branches to be chipped into a more manageable size. Depending on the model, homeowner units can accept branches up to three inches in diameter.

The chipping of branches is done by one or more fixed steel chipper blades (or knives). The rotating blades reduce the branches into chunks. The more blades the chipper has, the more efficient the chipping procedure. The chute size tells you what size material the machine can handle. A tamper is used to push material into the chipping chamber. Remember that the blades will need sharpening or replacing occasionally.

Choosing a Chipper or Chipper/Shredder or Shredder

First decide on how you plan to use the chipper/shredder. If your needs are limited to reducing leaves and twigs, you'll want either a shredder-only unit or a chipper/shredder.

If you have large properties and need to grind small branches, you may require a chipper/shredder. These units are gas-powered; larger ones have an electric start button and wheels for mobility. In addition to the size of your yard, keep in mind the number and kind of trees to be maintained. Deciduous trees, for example, provide a real workout for a small leaf shredder so go larger.

If you have large diameter branches (3 inches or greater) than chippers only units are required. The large and powerful Chipper/Shredder combinations typically only chip up to 3 inch diameter branches.

Other factors to consider:

bulletEngine horsepower and shredder RPMs (revolutions per minute). Horsepower ranges from 1 HP on electric units up to 10 HP on gas-powered machines.
bulletEngine horsepower for chippers can go up higher than 50 hp pn gas powered machines.
bulletThe size of the feed throat determines the largest diameter branch that can be chipped in the chipper. For example a throat of 17 inch x 6 inch means the largest diameter branch that can fit is a 6 inch diameter branch.

bulletThe number of blades on the chipper indicates the capabilities of the machine. In general, the more chipper and shredder blades, the more efficient the machine.

bulletReduction ratio. A 10:1 ratio means that ten bags of yard waste are reduced to one bag of processed material.

Direct Drive or Clutch chipper:

bulletThe direct drive version keeps the chipper blades moving whenever the motor is on. These models are generally less expensive.

bulletLarger chipper models use a clutch to disengage the blades from rotating when not being used. Clutch type models are generally easier to start and allow the motor to "gear down" when heavy material slows the chipper.

Stand alone or Power-Take-Off (PTO)

A power take-off (PTO) Chipper or Chipper shredder does not have its own power source but requires a splined driveshaft, usually on a tractor or truck that can be used to provide power to the chipper or Chipper/Shredder.  It is designed to be easily connected and disconnected. If you have a PTO capability then this is a more economical way to go.

However, if no outside source of power is available then a stand alone chipper or chipper/shredder with its own gas powered engine is required.
