Lawn mowers are not all built the same.  First there are the quality built ones taking seriously about the cutting performance, ease of use, convenience, safety, reliability, durability, ease of maintenance & care, repair
& parts availability and environmental concerns.  These are the qualities we look for in our products which we sell and distribute at Jack's.

So we at Jack's have done our homework choosing the best selection of products for you (for quality examples & features see our Honda Definition page).

All you have to do is consider your personal preferences and needs.

When selecting the proper lawn mower consider yard size and type of cutting required.

Lawn Size

The size of your lawn will determine not only the cutting width you need but also if a self propelled or maybe a riding mower is an appropriate option.

bullet

A 21 inch cutting width mower are quite appropriate for up to 3/4 acres and less.

bullet

Self-propelled lawn mower become increasingly valuable for lawn sizes greater than 100 square feet

bullet

If you have to mow a 1/2 to 3/4 acre you need a mower with a reliable engine (i.e. Honda) with a horsepower greater than 3 hp and definitely a self propelled one.

bullet

More than 3/4 acre — you may want to consider a riding mower or a tractor with mower.

Terrain consideration

Self-propelled lawn mower makes cutting lawns with a slope a lot easier to maneuver on.

High wheel mower  are good for rough terrain, providing easy maneuverability.

Swival front wheels are great for mowing around a lot of obstacles,

Rear bagger allows greater maneuverability for faster, easier work.

Push or Self-propelled

Push mowers provide exercise while you mow. But, unless exercise is paramount or the lawn is small (less than 100 square feet) a self-propelled mower is a wonder especially if there is the chance that either someone other than yourself may mow the lawn who is not as energetic as yourself or you may have a low energy level day.

If you have a larger yard (more than 100 sq. ft.), rough terrain, health concerns or are worried about being out in the sun too long, you should consider getting a self-propelled lawn mower, which takes a lot of the effort out of mowing.

If exercise is still important we suggest using the self-propelled mower to create a super nice pattern by cutting it twice with the second pass crosswise mowing in a checkerboard pattern to obtain a professional look.

About Reel Mowers

Reel mowers are found among the lawn aficionado who are diligent in maintaining a superior cut for the lawn. A well maintained reel mower minimizes ripping or tearing of the grass blade.  A clean cut such as a even scissor-cut of a reel mower allows the grass blade to seal easier than a rip cut, holding moisture and keeping out disease organisms. . They work on most type grasses, provided the grass doesn't get too tall. Most units have five blades and adjustable heights. The cutting action is similar to scissors. You may have to mow a little more often to maintain a close cut, but when kept lubricated and sharp, the reel mower is a quiet, and efficient tool.
